Welkom, Welcome, Wamkelikile, to the Garden Route Botanical Garden, George.
The Garden Route Botanical Garden is located in George, the heart of the Garden Route and has become a conservation and environmental education hub for the Southern Cape of South Africa.
We do appreciate it if you visit our office during the week during business hours so we can welcome you and get you to sign our visitor's book.
Join as a "Friend of the Garden & Herbarium" - please note we are NOT the same organisation as the Botanical Society of South Africa so you need to join our "Friends" to get our Newsletters and invitations to special events and courses.
The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the richest, smallest and most threatened floral
kingdoms on Earth.
The Garden Route Botanical Garden & Southern Cape Herbarium, therefore, have a vital role to play nationally and globally in the
conservation and study of what is as rich a diversity of plant life in this area, as anywhere else in the Cape Floral Kingdom. In addition the garden's position at the heart of the Garden Route, an area
of the country named after its fantastic flora and famous worldwide for the beauty of its natural environment,
makes it ideally suited to this vital role.
As the general population becomes isolated from the natural environment they become increasingly
unaware of how their daily lives impact on the environment; how much mankind relies on the health of that very
fragile environment to sustain all human and animal life on earth.
We are open every day of the year from sun-up to sun-down and entrance is free! NB - We have NO problems in the garden during the day (apart from unleashed & messing dogs!) - BUT we are forced now to secure funding in order to erect a fence right around the perimeter of the Botanical garden because of vandalism, drinking & drugging & general bad behaviour by night visitors (many of them from local schools!). This has become a terrible problem! PLEASE help us to access this funding, PLEASE encourage, in any way possible, the Municipality to help us to fund this fence. Donate a section of fence personally or through your business and get your name up on a special board in the garden! NB we cannot use the bequests for the fence as they are linked to special projects mostly in connection with the Moriarty Centre, Southern Cape Herbarium & IMITHI Project.
"The Herbarium and the Botanical Garden have become far too valuable and have used up far too much effort and self-sacrifice, to allow a few antisocial misfits to beat us now!"
