Education
Botanical Gardens worldwide are the leaders in environmental
education. In fact Environmental education forms a crucial component for continued survival on
this planet. No matter what the arguments, Man cannot survive without nature, and many of the
problems facing humanity today: Starvation, thirst, extreme weather, global warming and
disease are all a direct result of the destruction of our natural environment. It is
imperative that the general population be made aware of this plight and be given incentives to
work toward a unified vision of a healthy earth.
The GRBG is the ideal outdoor classroom, where people can interface with
nature. It is an area where people are exposed to the flora and fauna of the southern cape, where
they can see for themselves its beauty and versatility. It is a primary goal of the GRBG to
develop, in conjunction with local schools, a curriculum based education programme. We would like
to offer this programme to every single school in the region and give all learners an opportunity
to benefit from education offered at the GRBG.
The GRBG and Southern cape Herbarium often host school groups and students from the community. All
are welcome. If you would like to take part in a learning experience at the GRBG feel free to
