Volunteers and
Support
Volunteers contribute hugely to the running of the GRBG. In fact a fair
portion of the work achieved at the GRBG over the years has been through the dedicated efforts of
the Volunteers. Financially the GRBG cannot employ a large staff therefore much of the work
accomplished is augmented volunteers.
How to become a volunteer!
The GRBG is always in need of, and welcomes new volunteers. Predominantly a
person of any age, race or gender can become a volunteer, provided they are friendly and willing to
help the GRBG initiative. We have different sectors in the Organization which enjoy volunteer help
and new volunteers can choose a sector which best fits their individual skills and passion. The
sectors are as follows:
Herbarium:
Herbarium volunteers work on Tuesday mornings from 09h00-12h00. These
Volunteers are responsible for, amongst other things, the following:
- Mounting and Identifying plant specimens
- Filing specimens into the Quick Guides
- Indexing Magazines and Photos
- Labelling specimens
- Maintaining of botanic Library

Garden Volunteers
Garden Volunteers work predominantly outdoors; this team of ladies can often be found weeding,
pruning, planting and generally maintaining the gardens. Their favourite spot is the Medicinal
Mound, which they largely keep free of weeds and other pests without the help of GRBG staff. Thank
you ladies!!!
Nursery Volunteers
The nursery volunteers usually work on Monday and Friday mornings. This group of volunteers work
specifically in the GRBG nursery, propagating and caring for the nursery plants.
Jobs include:
- Watering
- Labelling
- Making Cuttings
- Collecting and propagating seeds
- Re potting and planting
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please feel free to contact our offices at (044)

Support the Gardens
As mentioned before; the GRBG and South Cape Herbarium are community benefiting Organizations
dedicated to the conservation of the Flora of the Southern Cape. This organization touches the
lives of thousands of people yearly and as such relies largely on the help and support from the
general community.
We are always in desperate need of Sponsors, Bequests, donations or project proposals. Remember
that donations and Bequests are Tax Free!!! Any person/organization that would like to support the
GRBG in any way can gladly do so by either contacting the Offices on 044 8741 558 or email
www.scherb@pixie.co.za
Alternatively you can volunteer your time and expertise or become involved with one of our
projects or simply join as a member of the Association, all of which will greatly help our
cause!
