Which birds can
be seen in the Botanical Garden?

Brown Hooded Kingfisher |
Over a twelve month period during 2000 and 2001 a bird survey
was conducted on a monthly basis in the garden and during this
time approximately 60 different species were observed. Subsequently
the habitat in the garden has been transformed somewhat with
the planting of indigenous plants and this has resulted in attracting
other species, one example being the Cape Sugarbird, which are
now seen regularly among the Protea and might even have bred here this year.
Other
species such as the Black Crake, Moorhen, Fiscal Shrike, Cape
Weaver and Egyptian Geese have successfully raised chicks.
A further comprehensive survey is being conducted by Peter Ginn who has several times in 2005 had ringing days in the Bot Garden with other enthusiasts and he is compiling an updated list with other interesting facts gleaned from his ringing. We will add this info as soon as it is available.
