Botanical Society of South
Africa
The Botanical Society of South Africa (BOTSOC) was established in 1913, the
same year the now world famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden was started. The
land for the garden, which was left to the nation by Cecil John Rhodes, was
allocated for the development of a botanical garden by the South African government
on condition that an appropriate organization from civil society was formed
to assist with the venture. The Society has faithfully fulfilled this objective,
as well as extending assistance and support to the other seven National Botanical
Gardens that have subsequently been established around the country. The Society
has also championed the cause of wildflower protection and conservation, outside
the gardens, through conservation and education programmes, projects and initiatives.

Wildlife
and Environment Society

WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society ofSA),
Southern Cape, co-ordinates our Environmental Education programme
in partnership with the Garden Route Botanical Garden Trust.
The network ranges from Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma and inland
to Oudtshoom. Teachers and service partners like WCNCB and
SANParks regularly meet and have talks or workshops with the
aim of supporting the teachers in bringing the environment
into all areas of the curriculum and in carrying out active
learning in the field.
The result of these interactions with the teachers
is seen in projects like the annual Schools Environmental Expo,
Adopt-a-Beach, Eco-Schools and activities in the Garden Route
Botanical Garden.
