Volunteers urgently needed - 15 July 2017

A Japanese tour group visited the GR Botanical Garden in July 2015 when they planted 50 trees and conducted a fascinating ceremony. At the bottom of the hole for the trees, envelopes were placed and the ceremony leader drove a wooden stakes into the ground with Japanese writing on them. The envelopes and stakes were messages of goodwill to their friends and families and on a commemorative stone the words "Our hope is for worldwide peace, harmony and prosperity" were engraved.

Also engraved on the headstone is the name of Mr Konishi Tsunejii who is the President and CEO of a large medical corporation which owns hospitals and medical facilities in Japan.

Due to the shortage of garden staff at the garden, the area has been overgrown with kikuju grass and weeds which choke the trees, therefore there is a dire need for the grass and weeds to be removed at the base of the trees, mulching and fertilizer applied to provide a good chance for the trees to survive especially during the current drought.

The idea is to showcase the Japanese Peace Garden by adding fynbos plants and even a small Zen Garden is being considered.

An appeal goes out to members of the garden to tackle this task as volunteers this Saturday 15 July, gathering at the new Education Centre at 09.30 armed with your own equipment (spade, fork and gloves), however, the garden will supply the tools if need be. It appears there will be rain on Thursday which makes it an ideal time to dig out the weeds while the ground is damp.

If we have 10 volunteers there will be 5 trees each to attend to which means the project will be completed quickly. If more energy and time is left, the trees on the Mushroom Meander are suffering the same fate!

Please join us in getting some outdoor exercise at the same time contributing to a worthy cause.
