Vegetation Surveys & Plant Identification
For Many years the South Cape Herbarium has been involved in collecting, and surveying the local vegetation of the Southern Cape Region. Roughly this region extends from the Gouritz River in the west to the Storms River in the East and to and including the Swartberg Mountain range and Little Karoo in the north.
As such the South Cape herbarium is considered to be a leader in plant identification of Southern Cape vegetation. Comprehensive species lists, data maps as well as over 10 000 mounted plant specimens and digital images can be accessed for plant identification purposes.
Expert Herbarium Staff will identify plant specimens at a cost of R 30.00 each. Often this can be a time consuming job with many species necessitating the use of a diagnostic key for Id purposes. Please note that for effective Identification a specimen with leaves, flowers and fruit must be provided.
The South Cape Herbarium also offers Vegetation Surveys as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process in the Southern cape region. A vegetation survey will include:
- Surveying of prescribed area by field staff
- Drying, mounting and Identification of collected specimens
- Composition of species lists with rarity index for each specimen
- Vegetation report complete with photographic images, GPS Data, disturbance indicators and recommendations on suitable indigenous planting alternatives (site specific)
Please note that Vegetation Surveys are highly specific vary form area to are. Thus costing is done on a pre arranged quotation system only. If you would like more information please feel free to contact us at : 044 8741558 or email www.scherb@pixie.co.za
